POP ART

Pop art is an art movement from the 1950’s in England but soon was popularised within the USA, the principals of pop art are to take images from pop culture from stuff like adverts, news and comics among other things. these were then used to either create part of the image, or the whole image itself. it’s generally interpreted as a retaliation/alternative to the art form of Abstract expressionism that was really popular during that time.

Andy Warhol.
Andy Warhol was an American artist born in 1928 who specialised in Pop art, how works take from the celebrity culture that was present at the time he worked on his art.
His work ranges from many mediums of creation such as had drawn, painting, to film and music.
In 1985 he began to pioneer computer generated art work using the newly introduced Amiga computers for 2 years until his death in 1987

Roy Lichtenstein.

Roy Lichtenstein was an American artist born in 1923 who specialised in the popart art movement. And through his work he became a leading figure in the art movement.
his work is mostly based around the fashion of old style comic books with whole colours and shading often comprised of dots to produce shading. He died in 1997 at the age of 73.

POINTILLISM

Pointillism is an art movement where the artist creates the whole image using individual dots of colour the style was created by George Seurat and Paul Signac together in 1886, it takes it’s roots from the art style of impressionism.
the phrase pointillism was used originally by art critics to mock the art used in this style, but through usage it have lost it’s mocking meaning as pointillism became more and more appreciated in the art world.

George Seurat

Georges Pierre Seurat is a French post impressionist artist born in 1859 he played a large role in developing the art movement pointillism with perhaps one of the most notable of all pointillism artworks “A Sunday afternoon on the island of la Grande jatte and has become one of the major art icons of the 19th centaury.
(it also stared in Ferris Bueller’s day off)


Paul Signac

Paul Signac was a French neo impressionist painter born in 1863, he worked with George Seurat to produce the art form known as pointillism.
they met in 1884 and soon after due to an appreciation of Seurat’s work he became a faithful supporter leaving him to stop working with impressionism and to create the art style.

CONSTRUCTIVISM

Constructivism is an art movement created in 1919 in Russia where the artist creates an entirely new image using already existing images.
It’s existence has influenced art movements such as Bauhaus and de stijl.
The principal of it was to reject art for art uses (hung in a gallery to be observed) and to have the art used in social purposes (for example propaganda posters.)
as an art movement flourishing in Russia the majority of famous artists are, themselves, Russian.

Vladimir Tatlin 

Born in Moscow he worked as a merchant sea cadet. He began his career in art as a painter in Moscow.
He achieved fame as an architect, by designing “the monument to the third international” better known as Tatlin's tower, though due to high prices it was not implemented in his time.
He did not regard himself as a constructivist, despite how he is known.

Alexandra Exter 

a russian-french painter and designer, born in Białystok Imperial Russia (now part of poland)
to a wealthy family, she was pushed into private education.
In later life she worked from a painting studio where she would play host to writers and poets

MINIMALISM

Minimalism is a style of design that is to reduce a subject down to it’s most basic components. It’s not just used for painting but it can also be used in architecture.
Minimalism is in effect, condensing something to it's fewest elements to create the biggest effect. Just like I have done for this section


Donald Judd

An American artist who worked with minimalism. Born in Missouri in 1928, he served in the army as an engineer for a year and then began studying philosophy.
In the late 1940s he began to practice as a painter and later still he branched off into 3d artworks. Later in life he also came to design furniture.

Frank Stella

Born in Massachusetts in 1936, this American artist specialised in many art forms, minimalism being one of them.
He is one of the most well regarded post war American painters and is still alive and painting to this day.
He moved to new York after graduating from college and

SUPERFLAT

Superflat is a post modern artform influenced by manga/anime, founded by Takashi Murakami.
it’s said to refer to various flattened forms of Japanese graphic art, according to murakami

the art that is created often explore consumerism and sexual fetishism.
And generally the art that is created is flat looking and also very colourful, they can also be described as, “psychedelic” or “satirical”.

Takashi Murakani

born in Tokyo in 1962, Murakani created the art style of Superflat
he is the founder and president of Kaikai Kiki co., ltd. Which he manages young artists and events through
he attended the Tokyo university of arts originally intending to become an animator
but eventually majored in nihonga (a traditional Japanese art form) though he later went on to explore more contemporary art styles.


Aya Takano

a Japanese superflat artist born in 1976
she spent her childhood learning about natural sciences, science fiction. Her artwork draws themes from exotic animals and urban landscapes.
She has exhibited her work all over the world.

UKIYO-E
Ukiyo-e is a type of Japanese woodblock print, produced between the 17th and 20th century’s they often show landscapes or moments in history.
As the east didn't share similarities of western culture in the earlier centuries it is somewhat like an alternative to art styles of the west.

Katsushika Hokusai

Born in Edo (now known as Tokyo) in 1760, Hokusai is referred to as the ukiyo-e master by many people, and his work is some of the most notable landscape artwork in the ukiyo-e style
before his death in 1849, he began to experiment with European art.

Tōshūsai Sharaku

started to work as an artist in 1795
not much is actually known about the artist, but there are theories that it was not a person, but a group of artists producing woodblock prints,
the work was produced for about a year until 1795 when it suddenly stopped, despite having one of the most memorable pieces
